The Central High School music department capped a banner spring music season by finishing third in the IHSA Sweepstakes. Campbell Hill (Trico) was first with 804 points, while Savanna (West Carroll) is second with 624 points. The Comet music department was tied for third heading into the IHSA Organizational Contest.

The third-place finish is the best for the Central music department. The previous best was a fourth-place finish in 1975 and 1997.

Comet musicians maximized the performances of five groups at the IHSA Organizational contest on Saturday, April 13, including three choirs (bass choir, mixed choir, and treble choir) and two bands (concert band and jazz band). The groups accumulated 262.5 points for an IHSA Sweepstakes total of 553.5 points in Class C. Comet musicians totaled 291 points after solo and ensemble.

Music departments are broken into five classes: AA, A, B, C and D. Size of school is used to determine which class a department is placed.

Students participating in choir accumulated 201 points, which is the second in class C. Trico is first with 300 points. Choir members racked up 31 Division I ratings, seven Division II ratings and one Division III ratings. Four of those Division I ratings were perfect scores.

Band members totaled 90 points, good for eighth in class C. Trico is first with 336 points. Seventeen groups performed and totaled 12 Division I ratings and five Division II ratings.

The IHSA included solo, ensemble, and organizational contests into a sweepstakes award. Students earn six points for each Division I rating, and three points for earning a Division II rating during solo and ensemble.
