Freshman Lia Prairie will represent Central High School at the IHSA 1A Girls State Track and Field Meet, May 16-18 at Eastern Illinois University.

Prairie qualified by virtue of where she placed at the IHSA 1A Girls Sectional Meet at St. Anne on May 9.

Prairie captured the sectional championship in the discus with a toss of 30.08m (98’8”). The toss was over three feet further than the second-place finisher. Prairie finished runner-up in the shot put. Her heave of 10.48m (34’4”) is a personal best.

Sophomore Alexis Schultz nearly qualified for the state meet in the intermediate distances. Schultz ran a 2:33.32 in the 800-meter run to take third. She also took fifth in the 400-meter dash, clocking in 1:06.99.

The Comets also picked up points from sophomore Eriannah Martinez in the 300-meter hurdles. Martinez finished fifth in a time of 53.87.

Three relays also earned points. The 4x400-meter relay of freshman Katelyn Schultz, senior Emilie Baker, A. Schultz and Martinez clocked a 4:37.85 to take fifth. The 4x200-meter relay (K. Schultz, senior Allison Girard, freshman Keala McCormick and Martinez) and the 4x800-meter relay (K. Schultz, sophomore Lexi Willms, McCormick and Baker) finished sixth, running a 2:03.05 and 12:43.28, respectively.

As a team, the Comets finished sixth with 44 points. Bismarck-Henning won the meet with 120 points.
