A year after finishing third in the Class C IHSA Sweepstakes, the Central High School music department continued its strong showing at the IHSA-sponsored music competitions. The Comets sit third in Class C following the IHSA Solo and Ensemble competition. Comet musicians totaled 345 points. Campbell Hill (Trico) is first with 615 points, while Oneida (ROWVA) is second with 435 points.
Music departments are broken into five classes: AA, A, B, C and D. Size of school is used to determine which class a department is placed.
Students participating in choir accumulated 231 points, which is second in class C. Last year, the Comets earned 201 points. Trico is first with 285 points. Choir members racked up 33 Division I ratings, 11 Division II ratings and one Division III ratings. Six of the Division I ratings were perfect scores, including one best of day designation.
Band members totaled 105 points, good for ninth in class C. Last year, the Comets earned 90 points. Trico is first with 309 points. Seventeen groups performed and totaled 15 Division I ratings and three Division II ratings. There were also one Division I and one Division II rating in piano events.
The IHSA included solo, ensemble, and organizational contests into a sweepstakes award. Students earn six points for each Division I rating, and three points for earning a Division II rating.
The Comet musicians will have the opportunity to add to its total during the organizational performances on April 12.
